Is Deck Repair Necessary? Hiring a Contractor to Find Out

    RobertBy RobertFebruary 10, 2023Updated:March 1, 2023No Comments4 Mins Read

Decks are great outdoor living spaces and add value to your home. However, they need year-round attention to ensure their structural integrity and safety.

The best way to determine whether your deck needs repair is to perform a thorough inspection. Look for popped nails, loose boards, and wobbly railings.

    Structural Issues

When decks are built with natural wood, the structure underneath can be damaged by termites and other pests, moisture damage, aging, and other factors. Signs of deterioration include cracks, breaks, sagging joists, and rotted wood beams.

Fortunately, many structural issues are easy to catch and fix. When a professional inspects your deck, they’ll look for signs of damage to the substructure and give you an honest assessment.

For example, a professional Seattle deck contractor might tell you that wood rot is a major structural problem and can only be repaired with a total replacement. A power wash and stain can remedy some surface damage, but if the injury is more serious, it’s best to replace the entire deck.

Another issue that might indicate a need for repair is gaps between boards. These are intentionally included to allow water to drain out, but they can quickly become tripping hazards if left untreated.

    Mold or Mildew

If you’re worried about mold or mildew on your deck, getting rid of them before they become an issue is essential. They can rot the wood and weaken your deck’s structural integrity, making it more likely to collapse in the future.

In addition, they can hurt your family’s health. When inhaled, they can cause skin irritation and respiratory problems, such as wheezing and coughing.

Fortunately, removing mildew from your deck is relatively easy without damaging the wood. The best way is to let it dry in the sun, where the lpllive heat will kill off spores and make your deck safe again.

Another mildew removal strategy that works is to apply a solution of bleach and water using a scrub brush. The bleach can work to break down spores, making it easier for you to remove them.

    Water Damage

Water damage can occur in many different ways, ranging from minor leaks that may only take days to dry out to severe flooding or sewer backups that can rapidly destroy your belongings and other structural elements of your home. No matter the type of water damage you have, it needs to be addressed quickly and effectively.

Another issue that requires immediate attention is a leaky roof. While a quick fix is possible to re-cover a roof deck, if you wait too long, the problem could wreak havoc on the entire structure of your home.

The beams and joists that form your deck’s support system are also susceptible to moisture. Be sure to check them regularly for signs of softness or rotting.

You can also watch for signs of erosion, such as the formation of pooling water or uneven terrain. These can signify that the ground is shifting and eroding, leading to unstable decks.

    Uneven Terrain

Uneven terrain may be a natural part of the building process but can also occur due to accidents, construction, or weather. A well-designed deck is a safe and functional space to spend time on, but uneven surfaces can prove downright dangerous when left unchecked.

There are several ways to fix this problem, from simply re-sanding and re-staining existing materials to a complete teardown, reconstruction, and rebuilding. It’s usually worth bringing in a professional to evaluate the situation and recommend a course of action that will keep you and your neighbors happy for years. As a bonus, you’ll save yourself a bundle by not requiring future significant repairs! Hire a contractor to get the most bang for your buck to get the job done right the first time. Alternatively, you can tackle the project yourself, but if you need to know what you’re simasvip doing, this could quickly become a DIY disaster.
