    Revolutionizing Cooling with Cooling-as-a-Service

    RobertBy RobertJanuary 30, 2023No Comments3 Mins Read

Cooling is crucial to our daily comfort and maintaining temperature control in vital infrastructures like data centers and pharma manufacturing. But, the methods used for cooling also impact the environment. The World Green Building Council states that 28% of global CO2 emissions arise from heating, cooling, and lighting in buildings. In Singapore, buildings contribute over 20% of the nation’s carbon emissions.

The need for more efficient, eco-friendly cooling solutions grows with expanding construction. In the next 30 years, cooling demand is expected to triple. Building owners must prioritize sustainable, smart cooling solutions, and that’s where Cooling-as-a-Service (CaaS) comes in handy.

    Cooling-as-a-Service 101

CaaS provides building owners with a way to have cooling in their buildings without buying, installing, and maintaining equipment themselves. It’s a business model that lets owners attain more efficient and eco-friendly cooling while lowering operational costs.

The building owners, as clients, avoid upfront investment and performance risk through this model as they are taken on by the CaaS provider. The provider selects the most fitting cooling system to match the user’s sustainability goals. The service also provides the ability to move equipment as required, saving resources, a feature that building owners would value. Basically, the building owner only needs to set the desired temperature and pay for cooling as they use it.

Advancing a greener future with CaaS

Moving to a greener future is crucial in the modern world, and CaaS contributes to that goal. CaaS employs data, analytics, and AI to enhance the efficiency of a cooling system. These technologies optimize indoor temperatures that can adjust to changing conditions. That efficiency is hard to attain with traditional cooling systems like district cooling, which primarily rely on hardware usage.

CaaS allows for solar-powered and recycled water usage in the cooling system. An AI-powered chilled water system relying solely on solar energy can also be deployed by CaaS providers to bring a comfortable temperature for numerous types of buildings.

Besides solar-powered cooling, CaaS providers can also offer building owners water-cooled chiller plant systems, helping operators achieve their sustainability objectives.

Why should building owners choose CaaS?

Traditional building cooling solutions like district cooling systems can be expensive. Owners must buy, install, and operate the system, frequently hiring multiple contractors for maintenance or repairs. Multiple contractors, each only responsible for specific equipment, can make accountability for system performance difficult. The high cost of improving efficiency or sustainability may also make it a low priority for improvement.

Now is the time to move to Cooling as a Service

Presently, cooling consumes 10% of global electricity. By 2040, it’s expected to consume 30% of Southeast Asia’s peak electricity. To reduce excessive electricity use and curb climate change, building owners must adopt clean and efficient cooling methods.

In conclusion, Cooling-as-a-Service has the potential to transform the delivery of cooling, providing building owners with a clean, efficient, and sustainable option. With the increasing demand for cooling, it is crucial that building owners adopt this new approach to reduce excessive electricity usage and mitigate the impact on the environment.
